The Ironworks is built on a gentle slope for ease of access. The charcoal sheds sit at the top of the slope embedded in the ground, which obscures their cavernous size. Once filled with tonnes of charcoal, they are now home to rabbits and pigeons who have respectively churned up the floors and left deposits of droppings.
The charcoal and ore sheds respond to the landscape, mirroring the angular hills around them, and are built in a Cumbrian fashion, made of stone and slate brought up from the region.
